In 2016 Governor Cuomo proposed his 50 by ‘30 renewable energy goal. It stated that by 2030, 50% of the electricity in New York state must come from “clean, renewable sources,” i.e.  wind, solar, or hydro. In the spirit of this ambitious goal, coupled with the growing subsidies needed to keep the Indian Point nuclear plant open, Governor Cuomo made a decision in early 2017 to close the 50 year old power plant. However, Governor Cuomo also announced that three upstate nuclear plants would remain open because the jobs were too important to lose, and announced that the plants would be given a bailout.

Within this blog the authors have hoped to convey enough information for readers to make an educated opinion about nuclear power in NYS, and more specifically, the economic and environmental impacts of some plants closing and others staying open. In addition to information about NYS nuclear, there is also some information about how other countries use nuclear power and some dilemmas they have faced because of it.
